Scrum Master Resume Examples & Writing Tips

A powerful Scrum Master resume must convey agility, conflict resolution, and leadership, which is a tall order for a simple document. You need to show recruiters the impact you bring to project sprints and why you’re the ideal candidate for their open role. In this guide, you’ll learn the top sections to include in your Scrum resume as well as realistic resume examples for each element. Discover tips to improve each application and make yourself stand out from the crowd.

Key sections to include in a Scrum resume

Every great resume has a similar structure – header, summary, work experience, education, and skills. You can see this format in action in our Scrum resume sample above or our collection of resume examples.

Let’s explore the major elements of a Scrum Master resume, along with realistic examples of each.

A resume header, also called personal details or contact details, is a short section containing personal information. These details introduce you to the hiring manager and provide them with a quick way to communicate with you. Most headers include the following:

  • Full name
  • Job title
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Location (city and state)
  • LinkedIn URL

Make sure to include all three forms of contact: email address, phone number, and LinkedIn profile. This gives recruiters multiple contact channels, so they can choose what suits them best.

Here’s an example of a Scrum Master resume header:

Resume summary or objective

A resume summary is a brief description of your professional history, including skills and achievements. This two- to four-sentence description is a quick way for the hiring manager to decide if they should read your resume further

A resume objective is similar, but it’s only recommended for students or people changing careers because it focuses on your goals and abilities, not accomplishments.

Here’s a sample resume summary for a senior Scrum Master:

Experienced Scrum Master with over 10 years of experience guiding Agile processes and removing team roadblocks. Proven expertise in working with cross-functional teams and identifying strengths through team one-on-ones and group huddles. Excited to lead a strong team and deliver successful products for Circles & Squares.

Work experience

The work experience section is the most important part of your resume, so it’s time to recall all your most impactful professional achievements. The recruiter spends the majority of their time here, and they want to see relevant, powerful accomplishments.

Start with your job title, then add the company name, location, and date of employment. After this, put three to four bullet points detailing strong achievements. Ensure these are relevant to the job opening and have a clear outcome.

Here’s an example work entry to get you thinking:

Scrum Master
The Woods, Montgomery, OH
May 2015 – Present

  • Encouraged discussion and conflict resolution across three cross-functional teams, improving teamwork and discovering strengths
  • Implemented Agile processes across 10+ teams, improving overall performance by 20%
  • Tracked and communicated project progress to 15 stakeholders, both internal and external

There is no specific formal education for Scrum Masters, but most hiring managers want to see that you possess a degree in business, computer science, or communications. This gives you a baseline of experience in related fields and shows them your work ethic immediately.

This is also a great section to place your Scrum certification, so be sure to include it.

Here’s an example education section for a Scrum resume:

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Bachelor of Science, Communications Ohio University, Athens, OH October 2009 – May 2013

Hard & soft skills

The skills section is a great way to demonstrate your relevance to a role and showcase your standout qualities. We recommend including five to 10 hard and soft skills, with a slight bias towards hard skills.

Here are the top technical skills for Scrum Masters to get you inspired:

  • JIRA
  • Agile Methodologies
  • SQL
  • Javascript
  • Stakeholder management
  • Sprint planning
  • Kanban

Here are the top soft skills for Scrum Masters:

  • Coaching and mentorship
  • Conflict resolution
  • Communication
  • Empathy
  • Patience
  • Time management
  • Interpersonal skills

Optional sections

These sections aren’t necessary, but they help reinforce your qualifications, especially if you’re a new professional with little proven experience. The most common sections include:

  • Volunteer work
  • Languages
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Certifications

For example, volunteer experience leading community projects is a great addition to an entry-level Scrum Master resume. Even without an extensive professional history, you can showcase your relevant skills and capabilities.

Note: Besides the education section, you can also put your Scrum certification in a separate “Certification” section. However, we recommend you keep it with your education unless you have multiple certifications to fill out the section.

Tips for writing a Scrum Master resume

Next, we’ll review a few tips and tricks to make your resume stand out and align with hiring manager expectations. Even if you have all the right qualifications, the recruiter won’t know you’re the ideal candidate unless you speak their language.

Focus on outcomes

Hiring managers want to see the impact you have on a company. Simply listing your responsibilities doesn’t tell them if you successfully deliver products or resolve issues with stakeholders.

Emphasize the outcomes of your work and the impact you have on your team, your projects, and your job. This is also called the STAR method resume, and it focuses on specific situations, the actions you took, and the results.

Tailor your resume to each job opening

It’s easy enough to send the same resume out to every job opening, but it isn’t effective. Personalize each resume you send out for the greatest results, including relevant achievements, skills, and keywords.

Including the right keywords is crucial and an important part of building an ATS resume. Using the right terminology ensures you pass through a company’s applicant tracking system (ATS) and end up in the recruiter’s inbox.

Another tip to get past an ATS is to use the right resume format. Applicant tracking systems have trouble reading certain resume templates and toss them aside because of it. Find a high-quality format with sufficient white space that’s guaranteed ATS compliant.

Emphasize agility and adaptability

Ensure you emphasize your agility throughout your entire resume. Scrum Masters need adaptability for everything they do, whether quickly leveraging a team member’s strength, adding an unplanned task to a sprint, or delegating processes.

Whether you’re applying for a senior role or an entry-level role, focus on your adaptability. Senior Scrum Masters can discuss adaptability in previous projects, while junior professionals can describe their agility throughout internships, hobbies, or volunteer work.
